History of the practice
Previously Co-op Eye Care, the practice became a partnership in 1986 when Jane joined. She took over complete ownership in 2001 when it became Jane Barker Opticians.
Jane has endeavoured to keep the personal touch, knowing and retaining patients from the very early days such that they have become friends.
The practice has continued to develop over the years, keeping up-to-date with new equipment and ideas. In the last 12 months we have had new computer testing equipment and a refit in the front of the practice giving it a new cleaner look.
We offer retinal photography and diabetic retinopathy screening under the Cheshire NHS scheme.
Our friendly and thorough approach ensures the best advice to suit individual needs.
Ms Jane Barker BSc (Hons) FCOptom
Jane graduated in optometry from Manchester University in 1974, having previously obtained a degree in zoology from Swansea University. She completed her professional qualification in Derbyshire before moving to Winsford, Cheshire in 1976. She became a partner with the Co-op in 1985 opening “Jane Barker and Partner Opticians” in both Middlewich and Crewe. In 2001 she gave up the Crewe practice to take sole ownership of “Jane Barker Opticians” in Middlewich. She’s very involved with continuing professional development, having previously been the secretary of the North Midland Optical Society and is currently the Chairperson of the Lancashire Optical Society and is also on the North and West Lancashire Local Optical Committee. The Optical Societies organise educational events for local optometrists. She has a keen interest in Diabetic Retinopathy and is a Primary and Secondary grader with both Cheshire and Lancashire Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Services. Now living in Lancashire she commutes back to Cheshire for two to three days each week.

Jane’s son, Iwan, came into optics in 2011 from a background in Engineering and Management. He is responsible for practice development and modernisation. He has practice support qualifications from the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers and has gained both dispensing experience at another practice and technical experience at a local glazing laboratory. He has extensive knowledge of both frame styling and lens types and is able to offer the best advice to patients on suiting their individual needs when dispensing spectacles.
Mrs Jo Leeming
Jo joined the practice in 2005 as Reception staff on a part-time basis, having previously worked in Finance.
